Our latest science challenge was to construct a gear system. It was our job to work together as a group; to read the instructions carefully and correctly assemble the gear system using cardboard, paper templates and butterfly pins. After construction, we experimented with our gears and discovered that gears nest to each other sin in opposite directions. We also learned that smaller gears sin faster than larger gears because they have fewer teeth.
Pulleys Palooza
Given various classroom materials and recycled goods, we were challenged to construct pulleys with a grooved wheel, a rope and a load,
Light Experiments
We experimented with flashlights and laser pointers to discover that light travels in a straight line.
Habitat Murals
We worked for three weeks on these murals. First, we researched the the features of different habitats such as its flora, fauna, climate and natural resources. We learned about some of the ways that humans are impacting these habitats and we brainstormed ways that we can help protect them. We then worked in groups to produce the murals seen below. We made sure to include text features such as; bold text, sub-titles, images with captions and a glossary of science words.
Oh No! Oil Spill.
Grade 4C made our own oil spills and then tested different tools to clean the oil from our model ocean habitat. We discovered that dish soap was the best method to clean up oil spills. Who knew? We thought it was going to be the least effective.
