SCIENCE
March to May - Pulleys and Gears
Students should remember from Grade 2 that simple machines are designed to help humans do work of some kind. In the next two months, we will take a more in depth look at two specific kinds of simple machines: pulleys and gears.
December to February - Light and Sound
Sources of light and sound are all around us. In our next unit, we will be investigating the properties of light and sound through a variety of hands-on experiments. Your first science project will be to design and construct your very own sound maker, along with a PowerPoint (or Prezi). The majority of this assignment will be completed over the Christmas break.
We will also take a moment to reflect on the important roles that light and sound play in our daily lives. can you imagine what your life would like in complete darkness, without any light? What about life without sound? Think of what it must feel like for individuals with impairments that prevent them from seeing or hearing.
Key Words to Know :
Sound - vibration, vocal chords, voice box, larynx, instruments, echo, amplitude, pitch, volume, ear drum
Light - reflection, refraction, absorption, convex, concave, translucent, transparent

September to November - Habitats and Communities
We will be exploring habitats and the challenges for the communities that live in each of them. From the arctic to rainforests, from mountains to wetlands, we will look at how animals depend on and affect their habitat. We will also investigate how humans depend on habitats for food and shelter, but can also endanger the environment and the lives of animals that live there. As well, we will study the relationships among the plants and animals that call each habitat home.
